Need help in a OLD town in Lithuania?
Lundi, août 11th, 2008There are some 20,000 villages in Lithuania, which is about the size of Ireland. This is the best site for finding villages and their locations:
http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/LocTown.asp
You will want to limit your search to Lithuania, which you can select in the menu.
Please note that the Lithuanian alphabet does not have a W in it. V’s were often changed to W’s when the words came to the US.
The search tool at the ShtetlSeeker site is sophisticated enough that you don’t have to have the absolutely correct spelling. But if you don’t find the name, play around with the spelling a bit.
If all of this fails, there is an excellent discussion group on www.jewishgen.org. Almost certainly there will be someone there who can help you.
And if that doesn’t work (which I’m pretty sure it will), post your question on this site:

They love digging out the correct spelling of obscure Lithuanian villages.
Good luck. I’ll bet that you find the location of the village!
